Kitchen Storage Ideas
As space is a vital commodity in the modern home, it’s a good idea to have plenty of handy storage units to keep everything in a safe and convenient place.
Nowhere is storage more an issue than the kitchen, the home of food, plates, cups, glasses, dinnerware, small appliances, and cookware; everything that needs a home so that your kitchen worktops don't get cluttered.
Here are a few storage ideas that you can use whether you're designing a new kitchen or finding new space in an old one. This should help make the hub of your home clutter free, allowing you to make the most of your kitchen.
If you have an open-plan kitchen and living room, then barriers or room dividers are vital to make the area a practical living space. Sometimes free-standing shelves can be an attractive place to store things. Be aware that any pots, pans, or crockery might not be suitable for completely open shelves, particularly if you have small children around, but open shelves make great display areas for cookbooks, small appliances, collections of antique crockery, and decorative bowls and serving platters. Stylish boxes can fill in the gaps, and they're great for holding back issues of cooking magazines or even the "rubbish drawer" kinds of things that tend to accumulate in a kitchen.
Make sure that free-standing units are sturdy and secured to the floor, as they could be dangerous if overloaded with all your kitchenware.
It would be ideal to choose a new kitchen design and have a kitchen that features pull-out units for below the counter worktop - they're the perfect hidden storage spaces, as you can use the full depth of the cupboard and leave nothing at the back.
For kitchen cabinets above the counters and worktop, make sure they use the full height of your kitchen. As much of the top quarter of most rooms is neglected, and it can be used as perfectly good storage space for infrequently used items. A step stool is all you need to gain the higher vantage point needed to open those very-top doors and retrieve any item.
At the corners of your kitchen, pull-out or rotating shelves work well to utilise corner units and ensure that the space isn't wasted. A simple pull-out corner unit is perfect to store pots, pans, and casserole dishes. Rotating or carousel shelves can be used to store tinned food and other canned goods, freeing up space in your cabinets and pantry.
These simple steps will help de-clutter your kitchen, allowing you to be far more efficient around the busiest room in your home. We recently visited with interior designer Katy Cleare from Westport, CT, and she showed us some of her favorite storage spaces in her kitchen.
