6 Modern Bookshelves that Tweek the Imagination

Irwin Weiner ASID - Physical books are beautiful. They deserve to be displayed well in a home. As an interior designer, I'm often asked to come up with storage solutions for books and small accessories - sometimes collections, sometimes mementos from my clients' travels - so I'll come up with custom library built-in solutions in a dining room, family room, media room, or traditonal den.

What I'm always amazed at, however, are the innovative designs for stand-alone or wall-mounted bookshelves. So unusual - and sometimes downright goofy! It's not enough to have flat shelves supported by end and back pieces; modern bookshelves have to "do something" or "say something."

It's all a bit silly, but some clever new bookshelves can add a touch of fun and whimsy into a too-serious room, and I'm all for lightening-up a design scheme. Click on each photo for more information.

Wish List: Everyday Scandinavian from Muuto

Irwin Weiner ASID - The clean lines and elegant simplicity and humor of Scandinavian design are celebrated in a line of home goods created by Muuto (based on the Finnish word for "new perspectives"). Design lovers have to appreciate where this company is coming from - they seek out the best Scandinavian designers and design agencies and have them come up with solutions to everyday objects, from sofas to pendant lighting and tabletop. Four Flower VaseI've included a few of my favorites below - and feel free to stuff my stockings with any of them. You know how much I admire home goods that are beautifully designed, fully functional, and well made. Shelving It In Style with Drugeot Labo Storage Systems

Irwin Weiner ASID - I'm on my handmade high horse once again. I admire furniture that speaks fluent handmade. With French design and manufacturing firm Drugeot Labo, I've found some wonderful storage resources that are flexible and bespoke looking, thanks to the designs of Pierre Rochepeau. Pictured above: Kao Shelving Triple, Kao Shelving Single, Bric à Brac Shelving, and 3 Mats Shelving.

Also look to Drugeot Labo for innovative coffee and end tables, like the lovely whirling dirvish Toupie side tables (above), beautiful top-like creations crafted from limewood and steel. But back to shelving systems - I'm also in love with Bibliofleur, a whimsical take on bookshelves supported by modern white flower bases (see photos below).
