Art & Accessories

Q: What Are Good Starting Places for Art & Accessories?

Art and accessories are like the jewelry of a room. Furniture, rugs, and window treatments are the basic outfits. You need art and accessories, thoughtfully added  to your interiors, to complete the design ensemble. The end result will be a great "finished"  look. Bottom line: you aren't done decorating until you accessorize. This episode of Design2Share Q&A covers Nicola and Irwin's tips and advice on how to select special pieces, what to do with scale in any room, tips for buying art with your design scheme in mind, changing outdated picture frames and lampshades, the importance of David Hicks' concept of "tablescapes" for arranging accessories, where and how to buy artwork, and tips to keep in mind when purchasing art.

What is the main emphasis when arranging accessories in a room?

David Hicks, a famous English designer, would group similar items together and create what he called "table-scapes." Too many accessories is like too much spice -- you can't taste the food. Strike a balance between empty areas and areas with accessories in a room. Also, when grouping different items together, it's safer to place the largest, most striking accessory in the center of a grouping, and smaller items surrounding it. The composition should form a triangle, like a pyramid. We hope these comments are helpful to you, and thank you so much for your question, Erina.

Art Deco is a jazzy style with straight lines, geometric and abstracted shapes used in buildings, furniture and decorative details. This is the main difference from the earlier Art Nouveau style with its flowing lines, organic curved rounded forms, fantasy themes and gentle pastel colours. In comparison Art Deco is bold, colourful, showy and dramatic.

@Erica

It's the lighting pendant, if there is one. Otherwise, it's the center table.
