Two Weddings: Minneapolis and Bali

Jay Johnson - As luck would have it, when good news came to my family recently, it came in pairs. Both my daughter Meredith and my son Kyle were married (unplanned) the same week! My daughter married her partner Chriss on July 9th in a lovely Minneapolis, Minnesota commitment ceremony (see photo above; Chriss on the left and Mer on the right and below) and then they tied the knot officially in Vancouver, Canada in a civil ceremony.

But our son Kyle flew in from Bali, Indonesia two days before the wedding and announced that he and his Balinese girlfriend Meita had gotten married in a civil ceremony on July 4th (see next photo, below); they'll be married in a short religious ceremony in August and then the families will get together for an expanded Hindu ceremony, likely in Spring 2012.

Irwin and I can't wait to join with Meita (below) and her family in celebrating yet another wonderful wedding. I've run out of children and weddings, but now it's grandchildren and a trip to beautiful Bali to look forward to! In this Roger Uzun video, there are some beautiful highlights of what's in store on the magical island.

Summer Project: Decomposed Granite Patio

Irwin Weiner ASID - In our first installment of our Summer Project series at Design2Share, I talked about how to do-it-yourself as much as you please when it comes to building a deck onto your home. You really need to know what you're doing to make sure your deck is safe and sound; but this DIY Network video shows you just how easy it is to make a patio that will be relatively maintenance free and quick to install. You'll need a half day or more - try morning when the sun isn't so hot - and the results will be impressive. Decomposed granite, when tamped down over a layer of larger foundation gravel and a fabric mat - all within treated lumber borders anchored to the ground - will provide a solid patio surface that will support furniture and foot traffic. For an interesting variation, you can use the DG as a filler around flat stone pavers that you can lay out in interesting patterns, either evenly around the patio surface or in other patterns like a decorative stone border. Summer fun, straight ahead!

Treating Building Facades as Video Screens

Irwin Weiner ASID - Watching the following German video from two years ago, it made me realize even more how playful we can be when we design exterior and interior walls. This Hamburg video installation project on the exterior wall of a gallery, called 555 KUBIK, won awards at Cannes but also wins design brownie points from me (a lot of good that will do them!) for beautifully illustrating that geometry, form, function, beauty, and playfulness should be part of any design project. Kudos to creators Urbanscreen.com for being so inventive, using walls as a video canvas.

Summer Project: Do-It-Yourself Deck

Irwin Weiner ASID - Regular readers of Design2Share know that I am NOT a DIY kind of guy. I believe in hiring professionals to do what they're trained to do. But if you'd like to build your own outdoor deck or patio this summer, then knock yourself out! Go ahead, but as you'll see in this time-lapse photo video (with still pictures taken every 30 second during key parts of this homeowner's deck-building process), you're in for more than you bargained for. With that said, many people are much handier than me when it comes to the patience, time, and skill required to do it yourself in the deck department. Here are a few good resources to help you in your deck-building mission.
