Old Mesilla
There's a beautiful town square in Old Mesilla, New Mexico that boasts this exquisite Catholic church, an adobe bandshell in the heart of the grassy square, some great shops, and the old jail where famous Wild West outlaws and sheriffs hung out.
-
Exterior of the Double Eagle
The unassuming set-back entrance of the restaurant is on one side of the Old Mesilla town square. You're entering into the old original part of the building and there are surprises inside in the newer additions to the structure. It's an amazing dining complex.
-
Entrance
The Double Eagle's entrance is grand and showy, with chandeliers, black-and-white tiles flooring, and a super-ornate bar. The opulence of the Old West is very much in evidence.
-
Bar Scene
It's hard to remember that the Double Eagle used to be an abandoned building. It took imagination and a good eye for antiques to acquire and install all the delightful details in the decor. This bar scene shows plenty of the beautiful items that make up the exquisite interiors.
-
Light Fantastic
The chandeliers in the bar area got raves from our party!
-
Courtyard Surprise
The Double Eagle's great surprise is when you pass through the bar area near the entrance and walk into an amazingly open courtyard dining area.
-
Lunch by the Fountain
Our table was near the courtyard fountain. The old brick flooring, the profusion of palms and other plants and flowers, and the sound of the falling water was a treat for the senses - not to mention the delicious food (they specialize in aged beef steaks, but their Southwestern cuisine is wonderful).
-
Palmy
Another scene in the palm-filled courtyard dining area. After lunch, we were invited to explore the more formal dining rooms that are situated in doors off the courtyard.
-
Dining Room Guards
These beautiful marble busts guarded the entrance to the largest formal dining room. There are several dining rooms off the courtyard, and all togther they hold over 300 diners.
-
Formal Dining
Chandeliers blazing in anticipation for the evening dinner crowd, this formal dining room points out one of the amazing features of the Double Eagle Restaurant: all of these decorative items, from the chandeliers to the rugs, were brought into the space since the 1970s. It's all made to look old and like it had always been in the building (which itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places).

You're Being Watched!
A decorative fantasy bird looks down on diners from its perch on the wall. This dining room boasts a double-volume ceiling and there's a wrought-iron balcony that also seats diners. The windows overlook the courtyard area and we loved how the skylights in the courtyard allow natural light to enter the dining rooms.
-
Stained Glass
Beautiful stained glass transoms adorned some of the doors into the formal dinings rooms off the courtyard area.
-
Adobe Dining
We loved the simple adobe finishes in this dining room. Contrasting nicely with the more frilly and decorative Victorian style in some of the other dining rooms, this decor and the wonderful ceiling beams harken back to the Mexican building tradition of Old Mesilla in the 1840s.

Touches of Red
In this final dining room photo, we're back to the Victorian decorating style once again. We liked the touches of red in this room, from the window treatments to the illuminated stained glass in the ceiling.
