Carved to Perfection: Max Lamb's Poly Chair

Irwin Weiner ASID - If you're designer Max Lamb, you take whatever you can get your hands on and turn it into something functional. That's what's so fun with his Poly Chair - and our featured video shows the creative process he employs in turning a block of low density expanded polystyrene and polyurethane rubber into a carved chair. Entire process from start to finish: about 40 minutes, as shown in the time-lapse photography process.

The Ultimate Folding Chair

Irwin Weiner ASID - In 2009, the Flux Chair was born from the vision of an industrial designer; he and another designer partner gave birth to the company that now produces the most amazing, strong folding chair. But this is not your mother's Samsonite folding chair to be pulled up to a card table! It's a chair unlike what you've seen before. The company's name is synonymous with change, and it also combines "flexible" and "luxury." Clever concept in seating, extremely portable, and flexible for both indoor and outdoor use. Watch the video to see how the Flux Chair assembles - and watch the model jump on the chair (I loved that part). Chairs are available in a variety of colors with optional cushions.

Free Chair Experiment on Streets of New York City

Irwin Weiner ASID - I love the streets of New York City because you can find practically anything you want - for free - resting by the curb. It's true! I've found great works of art (well, if they're free and don't hurt your eyes, they semi-qualify as "great"), solid pieces of furniture, and decorative objects. Avoid, of course, picking up free upholstered furniture pieces or bedding - bed bugs, anyone? But our editorial team at D2S was really drawn to this video on the Minneapolis based Blu Dot Real Good Chair experiment (about two years ago). What would happen if their iconic metal chairs were left on our city streets, then built-in GPS systems tracked them to their new owners? It's a great video. Enjoy!

When Decorating Relies on Really Good Bones

Irwin Weiner ASID - No, it's not Halloween or the Mexican Day of the Dead . . . but I decided to dwell on the darker side of interior design today and ruminate on all the different ways we can add bones (literally) to our home decor. "Good bones" most often describes the positive architectural features of a space, such as high ceilings, decorative arches, moldings, and attractive passage doorways. But I was drawn to how human bones have been increasingly creeping and clattering into our decor, from wallcoverings (see above: Beware the Moon's Skulls Wallpaper, Bronze on Oil Slick) to furniture (see below: Vanitas collection, including a skull chair, vertebrae floor lamp, and brain ottoman). The trend is not new, as you'll see in our creepy featured video of the famous bone-encrusted interior of the Kostnice Ossuary in the Czech Republic.
